ETSI TFS Announces TeraFlowSDN Release 6

November 17, 2025

ETSI SDG TeraFlowSDN is proud to announce the launch of TFS Release 6. With a large set of new features across automation, observability, optical integration, and security, Release 6 establishes TeraFlowSDN as a programmable and intelligent SDN controller that bridges IP and optical domains with full lifecycle orchestration. The full list of new features can be found in Controller Release Notes for the TFS Controller and NSC Release Notes, for the Network Slice Controller component.

“The integration of policy-driven automation and advanced telemetry in TeraFlowSDN is a game-changer for operators. It enables not only faster and more efficient network orchestration but also the flexibility to manage the complex, multi-domain infrastructure that 6G demands. With this release, operators are equipped to provide autonomous network management as required for next-generation services.” Ricard Vilalta, CTTC, Chair of SDG.

Key Highlights of TeraFlowSDN Release 6

Closed-Loop Automation

Introduction of policy-driven KPI observation and plugin-based automation services, enabling intent-based control and adaptive responses to real-time network conditions.

Advanced Observability

Integration of P4 in-band telemetry, OpenConfig/gNMI collectors, and IETF SIMAP support for standardized, real-time monitoring of services and slices

IP–Optical Convergence

New capabilities to support flexgrid lightpath deployment, optical bandwidth expansion, IPoWDM service management, and coherent Digital SubCarrier Multiplexing-based pluggable connectivity, OpenROADM support, unifying packet and optical layers. .

Multi-Domain Orchestration

Enhanced NBI connector to ETSI Open Source MANO (OSM) simplifies cross-domain lifecycle management of network services and slices. .

Security

Integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) testing within the CI/CD pipeline, paving the groundwork for quantum-safe transport networks. Also, a new programmable Firewall Agent allows to leverage peer-to-peer secured IP connections.

Energy-Aware Network Slices

The Network Slice Controller (NSC) incorporates a green slice planner, enabling sustainability-oriented resource allocation.

Enhanced WebUI and DevOps

Improved visualization of optical resources and ACLs, along with robust CI/CD optimizations for higher reliability and maintainability. y.

Future events

The ETSI SDG TFS#8 Plenary Meeting and TFS#8 Hackfest will take place online from 18-21 November 2025, bringing an opportunity for new features in TFS Release 6 to be demonstrated and experimented by participants.

In addition, TeraFlowSDN Release 6 will be featured in the upcoming Joint SDG Ecosystem Day on 26 November 2025, with 5 talks dedicated to TFS related research initiatives, and in the SNS4SNS 2026 event hosted by ETSI 2-5 February, with several talks, demos, posters and one TFS dedicated tutorial.
