ETSI organized the first TeraFlowSDN Hackfest during the Network X event in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on 20 October. With the support of the European Commission (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the Hackfest brought together 25 developers eager to get a first hands-on experience with the software developed by TeraFlowSDN, the open source group created by ETSI in May this year.
The ETSI open source group TeraFlowSDN (OSG TFS) is developing a cloud native SDN controller enabling smart connectivity services for future networks beyond 5G.
OSG TFS fosters innovation through open-source software for open technologies, architectures, and interfaces in optical and IP networking. TFS envisions a programable open and disaggregated network ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of SDN standards. Moreover, TFS supports a large range of use cases defined by several ETSI standardization groups and aims for interoperability with ETSI Open Source MANO (OSM).
TeraFlowSDN results from the work of the EU-funded TeraFlow research project. The research community brought their software to ETSI to maximize alignment with standardization, ensure a sustainable project environment, and benefit from ETSI’s global community reach.
During the Hackfest, participants experimented with the development branch of TeraFlowSDN Release 2. The day started with an overview of protocols, interfaces and data models for controlling and monitoring transport networks, such as NETCONF, RESTCONF, P4, ONF Transport API and OpenConfig. Following these theoretical sessions, a diverse range of hands-on sessions were run, allowing participants to deploy a TeraFlowSDN controller, on-board network devices using Netconf and OpenConfig descriptor files, and set up L2VPN services using emulated IP devices and transport API optical line systems. Finally, TeraFlowSDN support for P4 devices was demonstrated.
